Have you been pondering whether or not you should take a vacation? Are you worried about falling behind at work? Although you may miss out on work, taking time for a vacation will be worth every second. Here are 5 benefits of taking vacations.

1. Increases chances of receiving a raise.

According to Project: Time Off, people who take all of their vacation time have a 6.5% higher chance of getting a promotion or a raise than people who leave 11 or more days of paid time off on the table. Compared to workers who didn’t take time off, the vacationers also tend to be happier with their jobs and stick around long-term.

2. Decreases burnout.

Employees who take regular time to relax are less likely to experience burnout, making them more creative and productive than their overworked, under-rested counterparts.

3. Improves family relationships. Taking time out of your busy schedules to relax and have fun with your family has proven to leave a positive impact on your relationships. For example, A study by the Arizona Department of Health and Human Services found that women who took vacations were more satisfied with their marriages.

4. Enhances mental health.

Neuroscientists have found that chronic exposure to stress can alter your brain structure and bring on anxiety and depression. When you take a vacation, feelings of calm arise and relieve stress, which allows the body and mind to heal in ways that it couldn’t if it were still under pressure.

5. Improves physical health.

Stress can contribute to heart disease and high blood pressure. For both men and women, the New York Times reported, taking a vacation every two years compared to every six will lessen the risk of coronary heart disease or heart attacks.
